Macbeth hears voices saying "sleep no more" that he has murder sleep and therefore Macbeth will sleep no more. Macbeth starts freaking out and going crazy discovering who is saying that. He is afraid of the murder he has committed. He stares at his bloody hands wondering of whose hands are those and if all the water of the ocean could wash the blood out of his hand. He is starting to repent the murder of Duncan.

When Macbeth hears these voices, practically all he feels in regret and guilt. He indicates he never wanted to kill Duncan by asking himself if all the water in the ocean could wash the blood off of his hands. Of course, he does not believe it could happen, because he feels so guilty about Duncan's murder.

Why is the voice saying, "Macbeth has murdered sleep," and what is the irony in that statement?

After assassinating Duncan, Macbeth hears voices in his head which tells him “Sleep no more” because he had killed an innocent man, who slept defenceless and therefore he does not deserve to sleep in peace no more. Macbeth now does not want to remember what he did because of the guilt he has. Macbeth now cannot sleep in peace because of the guilt and also because of the fear that the same thing could happen to him.
